I read Arsenal PreK-5 parent Jennifer Pelling's letter about the importance of smaller class sizes with interest and relief ("Arsenal and Other Students Should Have Smaller Classes," May 9). The members of the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers know that class size does indeed matter.

We advocate for smaller classes in every bargaining cycle with the Pittsburgh Public Schools. The goals of our union are to have the best educational opportunities possible for all children and the teaching conditions necessary to make that a reality. Smaller class sizes are essential to those priorities.

We are encouraged that parents have also recognized that, especially in schools where many children live in poverty, large classes can be a strain on students and teachers. …
