Memorial Planned for Murdered Aid Worker

A MEMORIAL to murdered 'Islamic State' hostage Alan Henning will be opened today.

The circular garden at Eccles Recreation Ground has been created at the site where hundreds of Salfordians gathered for a candlelit vigil the weekend that news of Alan's brutal killing was announced in October 2014.

He had been kidnapped while delivering aid to Syria in December 2013.

Ceremonial Mayor of Salford, Coun Peter Dobbs, will open proceedings at 6pm.

He will be joined by Reverend Dr Anne Louise Critchlow, chairman of Churches Together, who will lead prayers and Alan's wife, Barbara.

Paul Dennett, the new City Mayor of Salford, will close proceedings.

Eccles Parish Church will remain open until 8pm to allow for private prayers Mr Dennett said: "This is an open invitation to the community to join Alan's family in the official opening of the memorial garden. …
