I am very disappointed in the Post-Gazette editorial board's viewpoint on Pittsburgh City Council's proposal to ban exotic and wild animal performances in Pittsburgh ("Overbearing Reach," May 12 editorial). Our city and nation should join those enlightened progressives who have already done so.

I am confused by the defense of your position that 1) "this bill smacks of government overreach" yet you go on to say that "federal officials should ensure the welfare of animals in traveling exhibitions."

2) You are concerned about exemptions and creating a double standard for traveling shows and zoos. Our laws and daily lives are ridden with double standards, yet you find this one objectionable when, in fact, it is more clear-cut than most. …
