A McKeesport Area school board member wants to eliminate district-provided cell phones to save money.

Chris Halaszynski said at last week's meeting that administrators making $100,000-plus per year should not get a free cell phone when the district is struggling with its budget.

"The problem is possible abuse," Mr. Halaszynski said, adding, "I would have to bet these cell phones are used way more on personal [matters] than business."

District business manager David Seropian said that administrators pay for the actual phones themselves and also pay a portion of the bill.

The rest of the bill is covered through the E-Rate program, which is administered under the direction of the Federal Communications Commission and ensures schools and libraries have access to advanced telecommunications services. …
