Official Says Board Must Prep for Possible Closure

TECUMSEH -- The Kansas Supreme Court might not close down the schools on July 1, but the schools do have to prepare for the possibility, Shawnee Heights superintendent Marty Stessman told the school board Monday night.

With a high court ruling pending, USD 450 needs to be ready for a worst-case scenario, Stessman said. He told the board about some specific modifications that may be undertaken if the schools are closed.

The good news, however, is that Stessman puts the possibility of a system shutdown at "1 percent."

"But it's hard to wrap your head around how we got here in the first place," he said. Stessman noted that more than twice as many staff members as usual have requested a lump-sum payout of summer wages instead of taking paychecks all summer long. …
