Seneca Valley Schools Choose Lower of Two Tax Increase Options

The Seneca Valley school board opted for a lower tax increase in the proposed $121.5 million budget for 2016-17.

Last week, board members debated whether to increase the property tax rate by 4.3 mills or 3.1 mills.

On Monday, board members set the increase at 3.1 mills and voted to make the proposed final budget available for public inspection.

The proposed tax increase would mean an additional $75 in school taxes for a home with a market value of $228,300, according to district officials.

The plan for the lower rate was proposed by James Nickel, board vice president. Under his plan, the district will budget $250,000 for contingency expenses and earmark any additional contingency costs to come from the district's $8.25 million reserve fund. …
