NEW YORK -- Mets manager Terry Collins made it clear Wednesday that he believes struggling starter Matt Harvey can turn things around. Harvey, once the ace of the staff before missing the 2014 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, is 3-5 with a 4.93 ERA, the worst on the staff.

Harvey will pitch tonight against Washington.

"I know he's working hard at it," Collins said, adding that Harvey had "never struggled" while healthy until this year.

"Now he's faced with a struggle and he's battling through it and it's not fun. When you're not doing it the way you know you can do it, it's a struggle. He's a competitive kid. He'll get through this. It's just going to take a little time."

Harvey has allowed 57 hits in 45 2/3 innings, and often has problems during his third time through the batting order. His velocity has diminished significantly the deeper he goes into a game, something that had not happened in the past.

Collins said Harvey and pitching coach Dan Warthen are working to correct a flaw in his mechanics. …
