UPMC's bid to expand its reach into western New York through the acquisition of a hospital hit a speed bump Thursday when a state health department committee reviewing the deal put off making a decision until next month.

The Pittsburgh health system's subsidiary UPMC Chautauqua Services Inc. has proposed acquiring the financially ailing WCA Hospital in exchange for a $90 million investment in the Jamestown facility.

Approval is needed by the New York State Department of Health, which includes a review by the Public Health and Health Planning Council Committee. The committee held a hearing Thursday on the issue but put off making a recommendation until June 9.

Among those testifying at the hearing were nurses from UPMC Altoona and UPMC McKeesport, who said staffing had suffered after those hospitals were acquired by UPMC. …
