IT was never the plan to replace Louis van Gaal this summer.

Even a disappointing Champions League campaign that had ended with an embarrassing exit from a relatively easy group had not dented the board's belief that the Dutchman was the right man for the job.

The official line was that United were '90 per cent' happy with the 64-yearold's performance and were looking forward to another 18 months.

But it hasn't worked out like that.

Ultimately, Van Gaal has paid the price for results over the second half of the season. There have been damaging defeats to Southampton, Sunderland and West Brom as United have gone from table- toppers in November to finishing the season in fifth.

All the while the fans' frustrations have grown. …
