The world of grantmaking foundations may be a mystery to many Pittsburghers, but those institutions have played a major role in the city's development and renewal.Recently, the Buhl Foundation announced the appointment of its next president, Diana Bucco, who will begin her new job on July 1, taking over from Frederick Thieman. She has served as vice president of the foundation and has developed many of its initiatives, including One Northside, a long-term commitment to community development in 18 neighborhoods.

The North Side initiative is notable for its emphasis on citizen-initiated projects and bottom-up planning. The foundation began with a survey or census of the neighborhoods to learn what issues are important to residents. It then developed plans for improvements based on the residents' needs. The project also paid homage to the roots of the foundation, built upon the fortune of Henry Buhl Jr., whose Boggs & Buhl department store was founded on the North Side (then Allegheny City) in 1869. …
