Belgium Eye Denayer as Kompany's Heir Apparent

JASON Denayer has been given a huge boost after being singled out as the natural successor to Vincent Kompany in the Belgium national team.

The 20-year-old defender will be in head coach Marc Wilmots' squad for Euro 2016 after Kompany - his skipper for the country and at Manchester City - was ruled out with a groin and thigh problem which required surgery.

And Wilmots has placed his faith in Denayer and Zenit St Petersburg defender Nicolas Lombaerts with first choices Kompany and Barcelona star Thomas Vermaelen both having long injury histories.

Said Wilmots: "Vincent and Thomas are prone to injury. We therefore looked at young players with an interesting profile.

"That's why I brought Jason Denayer with us - he has the best profile to replace Vincent Kompany. …
