Look for Wild Times in Section 1

Article excerpt

It's hard to imagine the Section 1-AAA playoff race being any closer than it was last season, but Greensburg Salem wrestling coach Randy Parsley wouldn't be surprised to see his squad finish in a three-way tie with Greater Latrobe and Penn-Trafford.

"The three teams are so close that it could end in a three-way tie," said Parsley. "That almost happened last year."

Latrobe claimed the Section 1 crown last season, with Penn- Trafford finishing second and Greenburg Salem third. But it was much closer when you look at the scores of the three matches in which they faced each other.

Latrobe opened with a 32-29 win against Greensburg Salem, then posted a 31-25 win against Penn-Trafford. In the third match, Penn- Trafford registered a 35-29 win against Greensburg Salem.

"All three teams are very evenly matched," said Latrobe coach Marc Billett. "It will come down to who brings their 'A' game when we wrestle each other.

"I really think it would be better if the WPIAL could save the best section matches for the end of the season," said Billett, noting his squad is scheduled to face Greensburg Salem tonight and Penn-Trafford on Dec. 13. "I like to see the excitement build as the season goes on."

Latrobe was hit hardest by graduation losses. The Wildcats lost seven starters, including four who had 20 or more wins.

The top returnees for Latrobe are Zach Small (26-11 at 103), Pete Elers (29-10 at 112), Daniel Thompson (22-15 at 135), Tommy Schultz (28-9 at 160), Anthony Gigliotti (22-12 at 171) and Brian Rusnock (21-16 at 189).

Greensburg Salem has all but two starters back. The Golden Lions' top returnees are Adam Caldwell (23-13 at 103), Dan Svec (23-15 at 119), Donnie Jones (38-2 at 130), Jacob Zeoli (35-7 at 140), Patrick Hutchinson (30-12 at 145) and Andrew Haile (34-7 at 189).

"Injuries will play a big part in who win the section," said Penn- Trafford coach Vince Testa. …
