St. Louis Couple Fatally Shot before Someone Set Fire That Also Killed Baby Girl

ST. LOUIS * The two adults killed in a Sunday morning house fire that also claimed the life of their 11-month-old daughter had been shot, police said Monday.

Detectives are handling the case as a homicide.

About 4:30 a.m. Sunday, the bodies of Melvin Thomas, 56, Marquita Jones, 31, and the couple's daughter, Madison Thomas, were found inside a burning two-story home in the 4400 block of Elmbank Avenue. The house is in the Greater Ville neighborhood.

Police Chief Sam Dotson said Monday that the baby had not been shot. Some kind of accelerant was used to fuel the fire, he said.

The St. Louis Bomb and Arson Squad is investigating.

Thomas, Jones and their daughter had moved in and out before moving in more permanently about four months ago, according to a neighbor. …
