ST. LOUIS * "There's an app for that" was a lighthearted line circulating Monday morning at St. Louis Police Headquarters and it's true.

Police Chief Sam Dotson announced a new smartphone application that gives citizens a platform to submit crime tips, among other things.

The SLMPD Mobile App went live at 10 p.m. Sunday, and officers already are collecting tips. It is a level of engagement Mayor Francis Slay has encouraged, Dotson said.

Designed by MobilePD, of Austin, Texas, it cost about $35,000 and was "money well spent," the chief said.

A similar app was introduced last week by the Missouri Highway Patrol.

MobilePD CEO Kushyar Kasraie said some departments using the technology are already seeing a 300 percent increase in reporting. …
