WASHINGTON * Members of Missouri's congressional delegation have introduced a bill to establish a Ste. Genevieve National Historic Site and designate the oldest permanent settlement in Missouri as a unit of the National Park Service.

The bill is sponsored in the Senate by Sens. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., and Claire McCaskill, D-Mo.; and in the House by Rep. Jason Smith, R- Cape Girardeau, whose district encompasses the proposed historic site. The bill would also allow the National Park Service to preserve other historic resources in the area. The NPS this month released a final resource study of the Ste. Genevieve site, and it found that portions of the Ste. Genevieve historic district meet standards for inclusion in the National Park Service system, according to a release Tuesday from the three members. …
