Early-Morning Basement Fire Causes $95,000 Damage to Southwest Topeka Home

No injuries were reported after a basement fire early Wednesday forced an occupant out of a southwest Topeka home and caused nearly $100,000 in damage.

The blaze was reported at 6:17 a.m. after a home protection system detected a basement fire in a single-story home at 1824 S.W. 27th. The system sounded an alarm that woke the home's occupant and alerted emergency dispatchers of the fire.

Topeka Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Brannock said crews arrived to find "heavy brown smoke" coming from the chimney.

Brannock said the home's occupant, who was already outside when crews arrived, told firefighters the fire was in the basement.

Brannock said two engine companies and a truck company entered the house and went downstairs, where they were able to extinguish the fire within minutes. …
