As fans were arriving Tuesday for Lindbergh's Class 5 sectional baseball game against Jackson, there also was some practice activity going on next to the fields as Flyers tennis players were on the courts preparing for the Class 2 state team tournament.

Lindbergh was one of only eight teams in Missouri doing so Monday as the semifinals are established in both Class 1 and Class 2.

Half of the final four teams come from the St. Louis area. A pair of Suburban West Conference teams, Lindbergh and Marquette, will compete in Class 2 while long-time stalwarts, MICDS and John Burroughs, will play in Class 1 in the team tournament Thursday at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield.

"This is rarified air for us," Lindbergh coach Brandon Murray said. "It has been a long time since we have competed as a team and we are both happy and hungry, happy to be there and hungry for more."

The Flyers, who feature just one senior (Braden Davis) in their starting six, are a team with a very bright future.

But the future also is now for the Flyers, who lost just one match this season.

"We beat Kirkwood in the regular season fairly handily and they have been an obstacle for us," Murray said. "And we really started to believe when we defeated SLUH 5-4. Our strength during the season has been doubles and we usually had a 3-0 lead going into singles. But in the SLUH match we were down 1-2 and had to come back and win some very close matches."

Junior Brett Kim is looking forward to a huge challenge as the two St. Louis teams will match up with perennial Class 2 powers in the semifinal.

"We are going in with a something-to-prove mentality," Kim said. "This is a new chapter for Lindbergh tennis and a showcase for us against teams which have been here many times."

The Flyers will open against Rockhurst in one Class 2 semifinal at 9 a.m. Thursday.

"They have the advantage in experience for sure," Murray said of the Hawklets. "But I don't think anybody on our team is nervous. …
