Governor Christie on Thursday renominated Judge Joseph Portelli to the state Superior Court in Passaic County, a week after he was reprimanded by the state's highest court for making inappropriate remarks to attorneys and witnesses who appeared in his courtroom.

The governor announced his reappointment of Portelli in a press release about statewide judicial nominations. The nominees must be approved by the state Senate. The release did not mention Portelli's recent reprimand.

Portelli, 60, has served on the bench for seven years. The Senate's approval of his renomination would make him a tenured judge, allowing him to serve until the mandatory retirement age of 70.

The state Supreme Court reprimanded Portelli last week but dismissed other charges accusing the judge of ethical violations by making several vulgar remarks and commenting to attorneys that child guardianship cases, which he was assigned to handle, were "long and boring. …
