IN this age of technology, supermarkets and people not giving much of a care for one another, what I have witnessed at Ashton- under-Lyne Market is heartening.

As I was getting coffee at Mandy's Cafe, behind me sat a lady, younger than me, who the market manager was trying to help. She appeared lost, had no money in her purse, did not know who she was or where she lived.

Meanwhile one of the women serving in the cafe was making her - free of charge - a slice of toast and a cup of tea.

Everybody was concerned. I felt she was in good hands.

Not all has been downgraded or kicked on to the kerb in our society.

I have been going to Ashton Market for years. I always get my fruit and veg from Fruits and Roots. It is a culture where I have built up friendly relations with the stall workers. …
