FEMA Confirms Flood Zone Maps Revised

Federal officials have completed their revisions of Paterson flood zone maps that forced hundreds of homeowners to get costly insurance even though their properties were in little danger being flooded, Mayor Joey Torres said.

But exactly how many homes and businesses would be spared the flood insurance requirement hasn't yet been disclosed. Preliminary maps showed that sections of all six of Paterson's wards would be affected, with the biggest impacts on the 4th Ward, one of the city's poorest, as well as the 2nd and 6th wards.

In some instances, homeowners annually were paying several thousand dollars for flood insurance even though they lived as much as a mile from the Passaic River and only experienced water damage when a storm drain on the street backed up. …
