NOSTALGIA enthusiasts donned military uniforms and forties finery to step back in time at a railway's wartime weekend.

The annual 1940s event centres around stations along the East Lancashire line and attracts thousands of visitors and actors each year to Bury and Rossendale.

German ticket inspectors took to trains along the network and Allied forces battled invading Nazi soldiers at Rawtenstall and Ramsbottom stations.

US military camp displays were held along the picturesque Irwell Valley, German tanks went on display at Bury Transport Museum and vintage wartime cars pulled up at Bury station.

One of the highlights of the weekend saw a Spitfire roar across the skies. The Mk Vb AB910 flew 143 operational missions over three years during the war, including flying in convoy protection patrols and escorting daylight bombing raids. …
