The board of Giant Eagle Markets Co. decided yesterday not to close any of the 31 stores where workers have been on strike for more than five weeks, and the company negotiator said he was optimistic that a contract settlement would be reached soon.

"The company wants to stay in the retail business, and it's planning to stay in the retail business,["] said Daniel Shapira, negotiator for Giant Eagle.

Shapira called a press conference May 14 to say the company was considering closing, selling or franchising the 31 corporate-owned stores struck April 22. Those stores have remained open.

Shapira, who met reporters yesterday in the Giant Eagle Waterworks Mall store, said he was hopeful that an agreement will be negotiated quickly with the United Food & Commercial Workers Union Local 23. …
