NAPERVILLE, Ill. * Alton Marquette ran into a wolf in Class 1A clothing at the state tournament Friday at North Central College.

The Explorers had the misfortune of pairing up with Wheaton Academy (21-3-3), which dropped from Class 2A last year and won all 18 of its games this season against 2A and 3A teams.

Marquette was forced to defend its end of the field almost exclusively. The Explorers fought gamely but fell 3-0 in the semifinal test.

The Explorers (14-10-3) will face Williamsville in the third place game at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Marquette displayed its most consistent possession at the outset of the game but barely dented Wheaton Academy's defensive third.

The Explorers trailed 1-0 at the break after the only legitimate scoring opportunity of the first half.

Wheaton Academy's Gretchen Pearson made a sharp cut back and beat defenseless goalkeeper Lauren Fischer in the 17th minute. …
