Central's Anderson wins para shot put

Amari Anderson would have ridden in the trunk. A freshman thrower for Hazelwood Central, Anderson crammed into one of the four vans the Hawks rented to make the trek to the Class 5 state championship meet this weekend.

"Everybody had to squeeze or stay home," Anderson said. "I squeezed because I want this state record. I guess I'll hop in the van and sweat."

Anderson's ride in the tuna can proved worthwhile. She became the first state champion in para shot put and set a personal best record with a throw of 12 feet, 0.5 inches. Anderson, 15, was the only entry in the event.

This is the first season para athletes are allowed to compete at the state meet. It was excellent timing for Anderson, who is in her eighth year as a thrower. …
