Nixon to Tax Agency: Speed It Up

JEFFERSON CITY * Gov. Jay Nixon wants state revenue officials to move faster when it comes to processing income tax refunds.

Three days after the Post-Dispatch revealed that wait times for taxpayers expecting a refund of their 2015 taxes had hit the 10- week mark, the governor directed the Missouri Department of Revenue to accelerate its efforts.

To help speed up the process, Nixon authorized the agency to implement overtime and bring in additional staffing if needed.

After saying in February the waiting period would be closer to a week, the department blamed the lengthy delays in recent weeks on a need to fight against tax fraud.

Nixon told them to speed it up.

"Our budget is balanced and our economy is growing. The Department of Revenue needs to process these returns as quickly as possible while continuing to protect Missourians from fraud," Nixon said in a prepared statement. …
