Riding out a storm inside your home can be a frightening ordeal. The rain, howling winds and the threat of tornadoes can make the security of your home feel compromised. If you are not under an evacuation order or in a flood zone, you still must take precautions while inside your home. To get through the storm safely, here are some tips from preparedness experts:

- Monitor the radio or television for weather conditions.

- Stay inside and away from windows, skylights and glass doors.

- Close interior doors; secure and brace external ones.

- Be alert for tornadoes. Tornadoes can happen during a hurricane and after it passes over. Remain indoors, in the center of your home or in a closet or bedroom without windows.
