A commercial laundry in Paterson faces more than $50,000 in proposed federal fines over workplace safety violations stemming from an incident last year where toxic levels of carbon monoxide made four workers sick.

Purrfect Enterprises Inc., on Clinton Street, which does business as Purrfect Laundry, has been cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for what the agency calls 22 serious violations, including several related to a late-December carbon monoxide release from a boiler. Other problems found upon inspection included machines without safety guards, electrical hazards, obstructed exits and lack of employee training.

In a statement, Lisa Levy, director of OSHA's Hasbrouck Heights office, said Tuesday that the violations "reflect a breakdown in the company's safety and health system."
