Rangers Lose an Assistant

Ulf Samuelsson took another step toward his ultimate goal of being an NHL head coach. But it also took him away from the Rangers.

The former defenseman, an assistant on Alain Vigneault's staff with the Rangers since 2013, was named head coach of the Charlotte Checkers, the AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes, on Tuesday.

The departure of Samuelsson, 52, will necessitate the second change in Vigneault's staff since he became Rangers coach before the 2013-14 season. Darryl Williams replaced Daniel Lacroix as the team's eye-in-the-sky coach after Lacroix joined the Canadiens as a bench assistant for 2014-15.

Williams, associate coach Scott Arniel and goalie coach Benoit Allaire are expected to return next season, though Vigneault said on the team's breakup day that all positions would be evaluated. …
