THE A62 to Oldham is like a barometer of the times. In old photos, we see a busy road with shops, trams, industry and working class homes.

Today, it's a postmodern mix of regenerated flats, new offices and housing from the 19th and 20th Centuries.

Off to the left, Central Park is futuristic with its Metrolink stop and 'seed' sculpture. At the municipal boundary, Oldham Road becomes Manchester Road and soon we see the timeless tableau of St John the Evangelist church, the Royal Oak pub and Failsworth Pole. …
