Nearly 15 years ago, Monroeville was ahead of the curve when it installed LED lights at many of its traffic and crosswalk signals. The innovative lights were brighter, used less electricity and lasted longer.

But now a lot of those lights have reached the end of their usefulness, so they need to be replaced.

The municipality recently received a $38,602 matching grant from the state to replace the lights at 25 intersections, including seven on Business Route 22, four on Mosside Boulevard, three on Haymaker Road and two each on Route 130 and Northern Pike.

Monroeville manager Timothy Little said the old LED modules have become dim or have failed completely. The municipality will provide the labor as its match for the grant and expects to install the new lights this summer during non-peak traffic times. …
