Assistant Muller, Once Considered a Candidate to Replace Hitchcock, Won't Return to Blues

Coach Ken Hitchcock will be back behind the Blues' bench next season, but the two assistants who were with him there this season won't.

Assistant coach Kirk Muller told the Blues on Wednesday that he would not be returning. That came one day after the team announced that associate head coach Brad Shaw would not be back.

After Hitchcock announced he would return for one more season before retiring, all of the assistant coaches were offered one-year contracts. Muller was mentioned by general manager Doug Armstrong on Tuesday as someone who possibly could serve as a coach-in-waiting to take over for Hitchcock.

But he added, "There's a lot of things that he and I would have to hash through before we got to that point."

Muller, who played for Hitchcock in Dallas and joined the Blues in May of 2014, was the head coach for parts of three seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes and was an assistant coach for five seasons with Montreal. …
