HURRICANE SEASON

SARASOTA -- On the first day of the six-month 2016 hurricane season, Florida Power & Light representatives demonstrated a vehicle in Sarasota capable of connecting field workers to the power grid and providing critical services to customers.

The mobile command center, which doubles as a community response vehicle, is Wi-Fi enabled and meant to provide power and communications services for customers during an outage. It also serves as hub for field workers who can use remote-access robots to investigate substations for damage without visiting the site. A stowed drone aircraft is capable of providing aerial views of power poles and structures to make damage assessments.

On-board technology will offer real-time updates from more than 4.8 million smart electric meters in 35 counties. …
