Article excerpt

Art lovers can shop till they drop this weekend as this month's First Friday Artwalk ushers in the 24th annual Mulvane Art Fair.

There are nearly 60 stops listed on the June First Friday Artwalk guide assembled by ARTSConnect Topeka, while the Friends of the Mulvane Art Museum note nearly 90 artists from 13 states will show and sell their creations Saturday and Sunday at the Mulvane Art Fair on the campus of Washburn University.

Both the walk and the fair will offer participants more than the opportunity to view and buy works of art. Many of the walk stops, most of which are open from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., will offer patrons refreshments, and some also will have live entertainment.

Performances include a community block party in the NOTO Arts District at Kaw Valley Bank, 1110 N. Kansas Ave., where Blazing Mojo will perform at 5 p.m. Check the Out & About calendar for more First Friday Artwalk concerts.

Blues will be the featured musical genre at the Mulvane Art Fair, where the Topeka Blues Society once again will have a stage. The fair will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday on the Washburn campus west of Memorial Union.

Maria the Mexican, an eclectic band fronted by Topeka-raised sisters Maria and Tess Cuevas, will open the fair entertainment from 11:30 to 12:45 p.m. Saturday, warming up the crowd for a nationally touring act, Louisiana bluesman Josh Garrett and his band.

The Josh Garrett Band, which will play from 1:15 to 2:45 p.m., performs a mixture of LA blues, New Orleans funk, Zydeco and rock 'n' roll.

"I'm drawn to all things Louisiana," Garrett said. "It's my culture, and I try to embrace it."

The Kansas City-based Lauren Anderson Band will play from 3:15 to 5 p.m. to wind up Saturday's entertainment. Originally from Chicago, Anderson, a vocalist, guitarist and keyboardist, offers a soulful, blues-colored sound. …
