DETROIT - Joe Girardi let off some pregame steam Thursday regarding the state of his lackluster lineup, then sat through another silent string of innings before the dam broke.

Rob Refsnyder's RBI single opened the scoring in a four-run seventh capped by Jacoby Ellsbury's two-run triple - a hit that enabled the Yankees to escape Comerica Park with a 5-4 win against the Tigers.

In a rare hiccup by the Yankees' vaunted bullpen trio, Dellin Betances, Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman each gave up a run.

Asked to protect a two-run lead in the ninth, Chapman loaded the bases with none out. But a major threat was defused by a sensational double play started by shortstop Didi Gregorius - a late-game defensive sub -- and turned by Starlin Castro.

"They've been saving us the whole time," Gregorius said of the hard-throwing relief trio. "[Getting] the win is the only thing that should matter."

The Yankees' path to victory has been impeded lately by a lineup that had scored a total of five runs in its last four games.

Before the game, an agitated Girardi refuted any suggestion that his club failed to realize the gravity of being in fourth place through nearly one-third of the season.

"You don't take anything for granted," Girardi said. "There's urgency in that clubhouse every day, and if there isn't they should go home."

And teetering at the edge of the rotation with a massive 6.92 ERA entering the night, Michael Pineda admitted that Thursday was a "very important" outing.

In his 11th start this season, and nearing his personal 11th hour, Pineda found the tilt on his slider, command of his fastball and change-up and used that arsenal to hold Detroit to one run over 5 2/3 innings, with no walks and eight strikeouts.

"[I've been] really working hard to pitch a game like that," Pineda said, adding through a Spanish translation that "my confidence was never low. …
