In many ways, artist and political activist Ai Weiwei is a modern-day Andy Warhol. That's certainly the conceit of the "Andy Warhol / Ai Weiwei," a show the Andy Warhol Museum through Aug. 28. It's running concurrently with Mr. Ai's massive "Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads" at the Carnegie Museum of Art, which also ends in late August.

Landing one of Mr. Ai's shows is difficult because of demand for it around the world, but getting two at one time is a cultural coup. Pittsburgh is the first U.S. stop on a tour that will take his work around the world. His public conversation Thursday with Warhol Museum director Eric Shiner will be difficult to top when highlights of 2016's cultural events are tallied.

For decades, Mr. Ai has pushed the envelope with both the art world and the Chinese government, which instinctively fears the subversive nature of his work. …
