SOUTHWEST FLORIDA CONSTRUCTION

Construction employment pushed to 20,800 positions in the North Port-Sarasota-Venice market in April, a 5 percent increase from a year ago and a post-Great Recession high in this region for the once- battered industry, according to an analysis of federal data by a national trade organization.

The Charlotte County market had 3,600 construction jobs in April, the Associated General Contractors of America reported on Wednesday.

Nationally, construction employment rose from April 2015 to April 2016 in two-thirds of the nation's metro areas -- 235 out of 358 -- though it was constrained by difficulty in finding skilled workers, the group said.

"Construction growth remains widely distributed by location and project type," AGC economist Ken Simonson said. "However, job gains were uneven: Many states included metros with large gains but also areas that lost jobs. …
