McCann plays

Brian McCann was out of the starting lineup for a third straight game with a hyperextended left elbow. But he was forced into emergency duty Saturday.

Before the bottom of the ninth, Austin Romine tried to catch a warm-up pitch from Aroldis Chapman: a slider in the dirt. But his mitt slipped and the ball bounced into his thumb.

"It's weird, that's never happened before," Romine said of the glove coming off. "It hurt."

The slider bent back his nail enough for Romine to start bleeding and he was pulled.

Romine expects to be fine -- X-rays showed no damage -- and he knows it could have been worse.

"Thank God it wasn't a fastball, in all honesty," Romine said. "I dodged a bullet there."

Meanwhile, McCann said he felt good in the game, and swinging in batting practice. He's ready to return to the lineup today. …
