Pet Dog Shot, Killed during Robbery String

Authorities were looking for a trio of assailants who pulled off three shotgun-related robberies in the pre-dawn hours of Monday morning in west Lawrence, the last incident resulting in the shooting death of a man's dog.

Lawrence police Sgt. Laurie Powell said the incidents were strung out over an approximate 35-minute period, from about 4:55 to 5:30 a.m. Each of the three holdups involved a shotgun, she said.

The first robbery occurred in the area just southeast of the Hy- Vee supermarket at 3504 Clinton Parkway, when a man was approached by three armed males who took the victim's property.

Powell said one of the assailants was described as being dark- skinned, standing 6 feet tall with a thin build and wearing a dark- colored hooded sweatshirt and baseball-style cap, possibly with a red bill.
