Fire Slows Down Chemical Cleanup

PASSAIC -- Authorities are continuing an ongoing and "complicated" chemical cleanup on Willet Street after Sunday night's rainstorm caused a small chemical fire.

Battalion Chief Chris Szczygiel said the city's fire department responded to Bartlo Packaging Inc. early Monday morning to a small fire that perked up when rain from Sunday's storm reacted with drums of an oxidizer chemical that was in the process of being cleaned up.

Szczygiel said barrels of the chemical, which is used in deck cleaner, were delivered to Bartlo Packaging last week. Last Friday an employee found that two of the barrels had exploded, spraying white powder and prompting a hazmat cleanup.

Since then, various departments have been cleaning the site -- which requires a process where the barrels are punctured and slowly cooled off and diluted with-out causing an unwieldy chemical reaction. …
