Teachers Ask State to Intervene on Pay

PATERSON -- The president of the teachers union has asked the state education commissioner to help hasten payments due to Paterson educators for the 2014-15 school year.

John McEntee Jr., head of the Paterson Education Association, said certain teachers are entitled to extra pay because they achieved "highly effective" rankings based on their students' test scores last year. McEntee, who did not specify how many teachers are eligible, said the union's contract says teachers who rated "highly effective" rise to higher slots on the district's salary guide. The change could amount to several thousand dollars in extra pay, depending on seniority, he said.

"It is unacceptable that our employees have waited all school year for their raise," McEntee wrote in a June 1 letter to David Hespe, the state education commissioner.

A spokesman for Hespe confirmed that the commissioner received the letter but had not yet responded to it. …
