Executive Stole Funds Meant for Needy Kids

The former executive director of an organization that provides services to underprivileged children in Jersey City confessed Tuesday to stealing more than $250,000 from the agency and spending some of the money on a luxury sports car and a mink coat.

At a hearing in federal court in Newark, Robert E. Mays, 38, of Jersey City admitted that he gave himself an unauthorized pay raise from $96,500 to $155,000 just two months after he was hired by Jersey City Child Development Centers Inc.

Mays admitted to U.S. District Judge Susan Wigenton that in a bid to conceal the theft he created false minutes of the board of directors that gave the impression the agency had authorized the pay increase.

Answering questions posed by the judge, Mays also admitted he siphoned funds from the agency's bank accounts to pay for unauthorized personal expenses. …
