It's Official: Tiger Says He Won't Be in Open

Tiger Woods made official Tuesday what everybody has suspected - he will not play in the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club.

"While I continue to work hard on getting healthy, I'm not physically ready to play in this year's U.S. Open and the Quicken Loans National," Woods said in a statement.

"I am making progress, but I'm not yet ready for tournament competition."

The Quicken Loans tournament will be staged the week after the Open.

Woods had given rise to the possibility he might play in the tournament he has won three times when he registered for the U.S. Open before the April 27 deadline. But that was a formality in the event he would feel better and be able to play at Oakmont.

But when Woods did not play in any PGA Tour event leading up to the U.S. Open, including the Memorial last week - a tournament he has won a record five times -, it became clear he would not attempt a comeback from two back surgeries at Oakmont. …
