The following CORRECTION/CLARIFICATION appeared on June 9, 2016.The German pastor Martin Niemoeller was persecuted and imprisoned by the Nazis during World War II. A letter Wednesday incorrectly said that he died at the hands of the Nazis.

Jeffrey Jackson's June 6 letter ("Anti-Trump Tactics") comparing anti-Trump protests to Nazi Party tactics is as wrong as it would be to compare the Freedom Riders' tactics protesting the Southern states' resistance to civil rights to Nazi Party activities.

Nazi Germany's tactics were to "divide and conquer." Trade unions were outlawed; industrial workers, Christian churches and universities were suppressed; and, even in the early days of the Nazi party, anti-Nazi protests were broken up by "hall protection squads. …
