Japanese Club Taking on the Can-Am Locals

The Shikoku Island All-Stars, a select group of players from Japan's top independent baseball league, will play a series of games against teams from the Can-Am League for the second consecutive season.

Shikoku Island opens its series today when it visits the Sussex County Miners for four games, followed by three-game sets against the Jackals and Rockland Boulders.

"They're very, very fundamentally sound. Everything's cut to exactly where it's supposed to be. There's no leeway," said Miners manager Bobby Jones, the former Mets pitcher from Rutherford.

Last year, Shikoku Island played 16 games against Can-Am League competition and finished 6-10.

"You'll see a very disciplined ballclub," Jones said, "and how they handle themselves: bowing to their opponents, the umpires, a lot of different things in their culture. …
