New Managed Care System for Seniors and Disabled Delayed

A Wolf administration overhaul of how long-term care services are delivered to government-subsidized seniors and disabled individuals has been delayed by six months next year in 14 southwestern Pennsylvania counties.

The new Community HealthChoices program, which creates a managed care system to oversee a broad range of services for Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries, will start locally on July 1, 2017, instead of the original target date of Jan. 1, state officials announced Thursday.

The delay represents acknowledgement that a serious educational effort will be needed for consumers affected by the program. They will be dealing with new care managers and options covering in-home assistance, nursing homes, medical treatment and other services.
