Pension Reform Is an Urgent Problem

School boards need to support Barry Shutt ("Retiree's Capitol Vigil Puts Legislators on the Clock With His Pension Reform," June 6). We should all thank Mr. Shutt for bringing attention to our teacher and government pension debacle that is a crisis and, if not modified drastically, will kill our education system.

Every day, we see that school districts are planning tax increases, reductions in staff and, therefore, increased class sizes. Teachers in Pennsylvania had an excellent pension program at 80 percent of their salary with 40 years service before they received an increase to 100 percent of their salary, with very low health care payments, in 2002. Even 80 percent is a huge figure compared to any private pension program.

I spoke to the Upper St. Clair School school board years ago, suggesting they become involved with the Pennsylvania School Boards Association to organize all school districts to support major changes in the pension program. …
