Meramec Caverns to Reopen Friday after Fumes Dissipate

Meramec Caverns will reopen Friday, three months after the popular tourist attraction in Franklin County was closed because of potentially harmful vapors.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced Thursday that the upper portions of the caves with ancient mineral formations no longer pose a health risk to visitors or employees.

"I couldn't be happier and, of course, my employees are, too," said Lester Turilli Sr., CEO of Meramec Caverns. "There's light at the end of the cave."

Test results from air samples collected last year showed unacceptable levels of trichloroethylene, or TCE, vapors in the caves. TCE is a solvent used mainly to remove grease from metal parts but also is an ingredient in adhesives, paint removers and other products. …
