It was on this day 239 years ago that the Continental Congress commissioned what some consider the most beautiful flag in history, the Stars and Stripes. It was a simple idea, not nearly as ambitious as the Congress declaration 11 months earlier that the 13 colonies be free and independent states.

White signifies Purity and Innocence; Red, Hardiness and Valor; and Blue, Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice, reads the adopted resolution. The colors would be organized into 13 alternating red and white stripes and 13 white stars in a field of blue, symbolizing the unity of the 13 colonies and the American peoples struggle for their inalienable rights.

Wrote the Daily Signal, a blog of the Heritage Foundation, in 2011: Since Betsy Ross legendarily stitched the first banner, the American flag continues to inspire each generation.

Throughout the War for Independence, American patriots fought and died under that flag in order to secure their rights and the blessings of liberty that had been so boldly proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence. …
