JOSE Mourinho's first piece of transfer business on his arrival in England at Chelsea was to spend Pounds 13.2m on his former Porto rightback Paulo Ferreira in June 2004. Ferreira went on to serve the London club for eight years, winning the Champions League, three league titles, four FA Cups, a Europa League and two League Cups.

He was steady and reliable and Mourinho said of him: "A player who will never be man of the match but will always score 7/10 for his individual performance."

United have not had a right-back who could guarantee that sort of consistency since Gary Neville retired in February 2011.

Ferreira was versatile but it was in the No.2 role that he was initially signed for by Mourinho.

It should be a role identified by the new Old Trafford boss for urgent attention as he puts his stamp on the Reds. …
