Let's Get Smart the City's Bid for $50 Million Grant Spurs Action

Pittsburgh is poised for a grand infrastructure makeover through the federally sponsored Smart City challenge. As the competition reached its climax last week, Mayor Bill Peduto made a final bid against six other finalists to win the $50 million grant competition.

The grant would be used for such ventures as bus rapid transit, linking Downtown and Oakland via Uptown; the use of vehicle sensors to control traffic lights in some areas; and a shared-space concept for vehicles and pedestrians in the lower Golden Triangle that would include the removal of traffic signals.Some projects, such as perfecting Carnegie Mellon University's self-driving vehicle, are already underway, indicating that Pittsburgh is well-equipped to take on more challenging projects if it wins the grant. Some initiatives would have the added benefit of reducing levels of air pollution, helping to manage high rates of respiratory problems in some communities. …
